Dispur Assembly Seat: Capital To Witness Intense Fight Between Bordholoi And Mira Goswami.
Guwahati: The Assembly Elections in Assam are scheduled to take place in a single phase on April 9. The results will be announced on May 4. Among the 126 assembly sets, Dispur is one of the most high-profile seats. The city houses important administrative establishments, including the state secretariat. Over the years, the seat witnessed high-profile battles. The seat will witness a tough competition between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress. The BJP has fielded Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi, while the Congress has given a ticket to Mira Borthakur Goswami. Jayanta Kumar Das is contesting as an independent candidate. From the past two terms, the BJP's Atul Bora remained victorious from the seat. In the 2021 polls, Bora won and received 1,96,043 votes, while his nearest rival, Congress's Manjit Mahanta, managed to receive only 74,386. In 2016 also, Bora registered a one-sided victory. He received 198,378, while his nearest rival, Congress's Akon Bora, bagged only 68,181. Meanwhile, CPIM's Sangita Das managed to receive only 1,944 votes. In 1985, he contested the polls independently and remained victorious, whereas in 1991 and 1996, he won the seat on Asom Gana Parishad ticket. The main contest in the state is between the ruling BJP and the Congress. The saffron party will be aiming to return to power for the third consecutive time, while Himanta Biswa Sarma will be eyeing the second consecutive term as the CM of the state. Pre-poll surveys predict the NDA’s victory in the elections. Sarma also continues to emerge as the most popular choice for Chief Minister post. In the 2021 polls, the BJP-led alliance had bagged 86 seats, while the Congress managed to win 22 seats.
