(Image Source - X) A disturbing case from Brazil has drawn widespread attention after authorities uncovered an elaborate identity fraud involving a woman who allegedly posed as a child for more than a year to infiltrate a family and secure an adoption. According to reports cited by The New York Post, 37-year-old Amanda Maria Souza de Oliveira is accused of convincing a family in Santa Catarina that she was a 12-year-old autistic girl in need of care. Over a period of approximately 14 months, she allegedly maintained the deception while being prepared for adoption, even participating in family life under the assumed identity. The case came to light only days before the family planned to celebrate what they believed would be her 12th birthday. Investigators say Oliveira deliberately targeted religious and volunteer networks to identify potential victims. By presenting herself as a vulnerable child, she reportedly gained the trust and sympathy of families willing to provide support. To reinforce her false identity, she allegedly adopted childlike mannerisms and behaviours and used toys and objects typically associated with young children. When questioned about her physical appearance, she is said to have claimed that past trauma had caused unusual physical development. Authorities also examined earlier incidents linked to Oliveira, including a case in Rio de Janeiro where she alleged severe abuse. Medical evaluations conducted at the time reportedly found inconsistencies in her claims, with investigators later concluding that some injuries may have been self-inflicted to support her fabricated narrative of victimhood. The deception reportedly began to unravel when a relative independently searched online and discovered records suggesting that the supposed child was in fact a wanted adult fraudster with a history of similar allegations across multiple regions in Brazil. Following her arrest in Santa Catarina, Oliveira allegedly confessed to the scheme. She has since been charged with fraud and identity theft. A court has ordered a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation to assess her mental condition and determine her legal responsibility in the case.
