Odisha assures error-free textbooks for classes 1–8 after nearly 1600 errors wsere spotted in school books A few days after several errors were spotted in school textbooks for class 1 to 8, the Commissioner-cum-Secretary, School & Mass Education Department has assured students that they will be provided completely error-free new textbooks at the earliest. Addressing the media on the issue of errors identified in the newly developed textbooks introduced for students of Classes 1 to 8 from the academic session 2026–27, Dr. N. Thirumala Naik, Commissioner-cum-Secretary, School & Mass Education Department, stated that the Government will assure that all students are provided completely error-free new textbooks as soon as possible. He said that considering the seriousness of the issue, Chief Minister directed to constitute a committee, under the chairmanship of the Development Commissioner, to enquire how the errors had occurred and to identify those responsible. Acting on the recommendations of the committee, the State Government has already initiated necessary action and has also decided to take further action, wherever required. It was assured that the Chief Minister has viewed the issue with utmost seriousness and has directed the department to provide completely error-free textbooks to all the students as early as possible. Addressing the media, Dr Naik said that the identified errors are currently being thoroughly reviewed and verified in consultation with subject experts. The revised versions of the textbooks will soon be uploaded on the Department's website and the OSEPA website to invite suggestions and feedback from academicians as well as the general public. After due consideration of the feedback received, the revised textbooks will be finalised and supplied to the students. Dr. Naik further stated that while the Government will be providing error-free new textbooks to all students studying in schools across the state at the earliest, but until the revised textbooks are printed and distributed, corrected content will be provided to teachers to ensure that classroom teaching continues without disruption. This assurance comes a few days after the Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi suspended former Director of Teachers' Training and SCERT, Manoj Padhy, along with three Assistant Directors -- Pralipta Mishra, Dilip Kumar Sahu, and Bharati Tudu for errors found in government school textbooks for classes 1 to 8. The mistakes involved spelling mistakes, incorrect names of eminent personalities and more. Teachers alleged that more than 1600 "errors" were detected in these school textbooks. Meanwhile, another controversy erupted after lyrics of a popular Bollywood song “Nimbuda Nimbuda” were found to be featured in a Class 5 English textbook used in government schools.
