In a world where AI slop has taken the centre stage, Apple wants to differentiate between the images clicked on its latest iPhones and the images generated using the AI tools. The much-awaited iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone 18 Pro now come with the Apple Reference Image, a feature that will help users to prove that an image was not changed or altered since the time it was taken. The tech giant said, “This is vital for photojournalists and photographers.” The Reference Image feature will come in the Photos app along with the corresponding image. It will allow you to compare the images to check whether any kind of edit was made. The tech giant is also offering APIs on iPadOS, iOS and macOS 27 so that the third party-apps can show these reference images. When an image is clicked on iPhone 18 Pro series, the primary camera lens also captures signed sensor data, which is later turned into an ‘unalternable reference image’ by Apple's Private Cloud Compute service. Apple has positioned this feature as one of its notable updates to verify the authenticity of the images along with existing image metadata and support for the SynthID, which will help the users to spot images generated using the AI tools. According to Apple, the SynthID support will arrive later this year. It is noteworthy that this feature will not arrive in China because of regulatory compliance. Moreover, the feature will not be available at launch on the iPhone 18 Pro models; however, users running iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS can develop and view reference images. Apple highlighted that the iPhone 18 Pro now offers the biggest camera upgrades. Another key upgrade to the new iPhone 18 Pro series is the variable aperture that can grab the attention of the photography enthusiasts.
