De Silva informed the Selection Committee of his decision, saying that he believes the responsibility should now be passed down to the next generation. However, his decision does not mark the end of his international career as the all-rounder has confirmed that he remains available for selection as a player and will continue to represent Sri Lanka. “It’s my genuine opinion that the mantle should go down to the next generation,” de Silva said in a letter addressed to Sri Lanka's selection committee. Sri Lanka Cricket CEO Ashley de Silva thanked him for the leadership he provided to the Test team and welcomed his continued availability. The decision now leaves Sri Lanka with the task of identifying a new captain for their Test side. "Sri Lanka Cricket wishes him the very best for the remainder of his career and thanks him for the leadership he provided to our Test team," said Ashley de Silva, CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket. After replacing Dimuth Karunaratne, De Silva captained Sri Lanka in 18 Test matches, which the island nation won seven of. As captain, de Silva took nine wickets at a bowling average of 44.44 while scoring 1130 runs at an average of 36.45.
