Ashwin Backs Shami After Agarkar Exit, Reacts To Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s Return
Buzz around Mohammed Shami's potential return is growing louder after Bhuvneshwar Kumar's comeback (Credit: AP) Ravichandran Ashwin, a former Indian cricket player, stated that since Ajit Agarkar is no longer on the selection committee, the new members may try to give seasoned players more opportunities. If Bhuvneshwar Kumar can return after four years, Mohammed Shami can also seize the chance. The main topic of discussion when India revealed their squad for the five-match Twenty20 International series against New Zealand was Bhuvneshwar's four-year absence from the national team. Additionally, it was the first selection made since Agarkar finished serving as chief selector. Ashwin thinks it might be time for Shami to rejoin the Indian squad since he is no longer in charge. "The chairman of selectors is set to be changed. Ajit Agarkar is no longer a part of the setup. Maybe Ajit focused more on youngsters and newcomers. But now you see, without Bumrah, India’s bowling attack can be a little susceptible," Ashwin said while speaking on his YouTube channel. "The BCCI is now leaning towards experience. The fact that they have picked Bhuvneshwar (Kumar), I would not say that the door is shut on (Mohammed) Shami either, but I am extremely happy that Bhuvneshwar has broken down the door for his selection," Ashwin added. In March of last year, Shami last represented India against New Zealand in the Champions Trophy 2025 final. He has not made an appearance for the national team in any capacity since. Agarkar and Shami have criticised one another for the former's lack of selection. Despite Shami's achievements in domestic cricket, Agarkar had also implied that he was not being taken into consideration. Bhuvneshwar, meanwhile, earned a spot in the Indian T20I selection for the New Zealand tour after a four-year absence. "He is going to New Zealand now. I am telling you, if he does well, everyone will immediately say, just take him for the ODI team as well. The selectors will be watching very closely," Ashwin said.
