Thousands gathered in central Delhi on Monday as Opposition leaders marched to the Supreme Court against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations of electoral irregularities. The Opposition parties, along with their supporters, have taken to the streets almost daily this month to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. As per the visuals being shared on social media, the stretch between Connaught Place and Mandi House was packed with protesters. Meanwhile, heavy police security was deployed across the national capital. Opposition leaders converged near the Connaught Place-Barakhamba Road junction for the march, organised under the banner of the INDIA opposition alliance and named "Chalo Delhi - March for Democracy". The protest marks an escalation in the opposition's campaign against the Election Commission of India (ECI), with Rahul Gandhi calling on Gyanesh Kumar to resign from his position. While the Congress leader and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha was marching towards the Supreme Court, his legal team submitted a petition in the apex court on Monday, following an earlier communication with the Chief Justice of India (CJI). According to sources, the petition filed in the Supreme Court mentions that all the controversies related to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar must be probed. In addition to this, the plea also demanded action against the police for their way of handling protests in Delhi. The plea demanded thorough examination of issues raised in the investigative report published by the Indian Express, which claimed a rift between the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Election Commissioners SS Sandhu and Vivek Joshi. Further, the suspension of CEC pending adjudication of the plea and rollback of the SIR was also demanded.
