Alia Bhatt's Alpha Rejects OTT Release, YRF's Spy Film To Premiere In Theatres - Report
Alia Bhatt's Alpha Will Release In Theatres, Not OTT Speculation surrounding the release strategy of Alpha is back in the spotlight, with a new update pointing towards the fact that the movie will be released on the big screen. There were recent rumours that the much-awaited spy action film starring Alia Bhatt and Sharvari would skip theaters and go straight to streaming after reports of a big digital deal. But Yash Raj Films (YRF) has strongly denied these claims, saying the movie is meant for a theatrical release and is still one of their major projects. For the unversed, Alpha is the first female led film in YRF's successful franchise Spy-Verse. Many reports floating online claimed that YRF had made a Rs 215 crore deal with Netflix India to release Alpha directly online, skipping theaters. This led to talk that the studio might avoid a cinema release. But in an official statement to Variety India, a YRF spokesperson called these reports baseless rumours meant to show a heroine-led film in an “unflattering light.” The statement read that Yash Raj Films will never move a film from its theatrical slate directly to streaming platforms, stressing on the studio’s pride in delivering cinematic experiences on the big screen. The spokesperson further described Alpha as a “tentpole movie” for the company and highlighted the scale and ambition behind the project. Alpha is part of the expansive YRF Spy Universe and marks a significant step as a female-led action entertainer. Headlined by Alia Bhatt, with Sharvari playing a key role, the film also features Bobby Deol in a prominent part. It is directed by Shiv Rawail. Originally slated for release on December 25 last year, the film was postponed to April 17, 2026, due to extended and reportedly “unrealistic” timelines for visual effects work. Even that date has now been pushed further to avoid a box office clash with Battle of Galwan, starring Salman Khan, which itself might get postponed considering Akshay Kumar's Bhooth Bangla announced its new release date - April 10. Meanwhile, Sharvari has openly expressed her excitement about working alongside Alia Bhatt. In an earlier interaction with Harper’s Bazaar, she shared how collaborating with the superstar left a lasting impression on her professionally and personally. She described the opportunity as a dream come true and said that observing Alia’s process and dedication has inspired her to improve her own acting. Sharvari also proudly mentioned that Alpha represents a first-of-its-kind opportunity in Indian cinema - an action entertainer led by women.
