UGC NET 2026 Gets An Upgrade: Check What’s Changed Before June Cycle
UGC NET 2026 Gets a Big Upgrade Ahead of June 2026 Cycle UGC NET 2026: Students preparing for UGC NET often keep a close eye on subject options, and this time there is something new worth noting. Ahead of the June 2026 cycle, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has introduced two new subjects, Statistics and Forestry, expanding the scope of the exam and opening fresh opportunities for aspirants. The decision was taken during the Commission’s 597th meeting held on April 18, 2026, based on recommendations from an expert committee. These additions will come into effect from the June 2026 session of the UGC NET. The UGC NET is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) twice a year, in June and December, to determine eligibility for Assistant Professorship and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in universities and colleges across India. With Statistics now included as a dedicated subject, candidates from mathematical sciences and data-focused disciplines will have a more direct pathway aligned with their academic background. The addition of Forestry reflects the growing importance of environmental studies, sustainability, and natural resource management in higher education and research. UGC has released the detailed syllabus for both subjects on the official UGC NET website, allowing candidates to begin preparation in advance. Aspirants are advised to review the topics carefully and understand the exam pattern before finalising their subject choice. This move is expected to benefit a broader pool of candidates, particularly those who previously had limited subject options aligned with their postgraduate specialisations. It also signals a shift toward interdisciplinary learning and the inclusion of emerging academic fields within national-level eligibility tests. The National Testing Agency has started the registration process for the UGC NET June 2026 cycle April 30 onwards. Candidates interested in appearing for the examination can now register online. The application window will remain open till May 20, 2026. With competition in UGC NET consistently rising, the introduction of new subjects could also slightly redistribute candidate volumes across disciplines. However, aspirants should note that the core structure of the examination remains unchanged. As the June 2026 cycle approaches, candidates are encouraged to stay updated through official portals and begin their preparation early, especially those opting for the newly added subjects.
