‘CM Vijay Was Not Trying To Look Powerful, He Was Trying To Look Immovable’: Body Language Expert Decodes TN CM’s Swearing-In CeremonyMay 12, 7:47 PM
From his open-arm gestures and controlled stillness to his lowered voice pitch and respectful dynamic with Trisha, Behavioural Intelligence Specialist Kanan Tandi believes Tamil Nadu CM Vijay’s swearing-in ceremony revealed far more than just political symbolism. According to her, the actor-turned-politician projected calm authority, emotional ownership and confidence without trying too hard to appear powerful. In an exclusive interaction with Times Now Digital, Tandi decoded Vijay’s body language and explained why his presence during the oath-taking ceremony felt different from many other political leaders. One moment that particularly stood out to her was when Vijay stretched his arms outward while speaking to the audience. According to Tandi, this is one of the strongest 'power gestures' in human behaviour. "In body language, space occupation equals perceived authority," she said, adding that Vijay’s relaxed arm movement made the gesture feel natural rather than rehearsed. "Tight elbows usually mean someone is rehearsing confidence. Vijay’s arms were relaxed and expanded. That indicates emotional ownership of the event rather than forced dominance." She explained that gestures like these subconsciously communicate confidence and security to people watching. "When a leader expands physically, the crowd emotionally opens up too. It signals, ‘I am not threatened'." Tandi also closely observed Vijay’s oath-taking posture, especially his open palms and direct gaze while taking the oath. According to her, visible palms are universally associated with honesty and transparency. "Usually oath-taking can feel procedural and orchestrated. Here, it felt intentional, like he was saying, ‘I command this space,'" she said. For her, what made Vijay stand out was the balance between warmth and authority. "He blended warmth with command beautifully." Another moment she found interesting was Vijay’s raised fist after the oath ceremony. While raised fists are often associated with aggression, Tandi felt Vijay’s gesture reflected conviction instead. "The fist was upward, not outward. Outward fists feel attacking. Upward fists feel ideological like 'I stand for something,'" she explained. But more than the gestures themselves, Tandi said it was Vijay’s pauses and stillness that truly reflected confidence. "There was stillness between his gestures. Powerful people do not rush transitions," she noted. According to her, insecure public figures often overmove or over-gesture because they seek instant approval. Vijay, however, appeared composed and patient throughout the ceremony. "Controlled stillness psychologically says, ‘I do not need your approval immediately. I know who I am'." Apart from body language, she also observed a shift in Vijay’s vocal delivery during the ceremony. "His voice pitch is usually medium, but during the ceremony it became lower. Lower pitch automatically makes a speaker sound more commanding and grounded," she said. She also noticed that Vijay maintained subtle eye contact across the audience without appearing overly dramatic, which helped create a stronger emotional connection with the crowd. Tandi also spoke about actor Trisha’s presence during the ceremony, something that caught public attention online. She noted that Trisha appeared emotional while Vijay was taking oath. "Trisha was visibly emotional during the oath-taking," she said. Having observed the two at public events over the years, Tandi said their body language has consistently reflected mutual respect. "None of their gestures together have ever looked vulgar or disrespectful. Their dynamic has always appeared deeply respectful." She also noticed Trisha interacting comfortably with Vijay’s family members during the event. "When people do not genuinely like each other, forced smiles become noticeable. Here, the interactions looked natural and genuine. That usually indicates acceptance." For Tandi, the most striking thing about Vijay’s swearing-in ceremony was the calm certainty he projected throughout the event. "He did not project aggression. He projected certainty," she said. And perhaps that quiet confidence is exactly what connected so strongly with the crowd watching him take charge as Tamil Nadu’s new Chief Minister.
