Some Claude Users May Have This Malware On Their PCs, Anthropic Reportedly Warns (AI-generated) Claude users might have a warning to take seriously. Anthropic has allegedly warned some users that their personal computers may have been at risk. They could be possibly infected with infostealer malware, which could steal login credentials and other sensitive data. This warning reportedly came after a Claude user shared an email from the company on Reddit, highlighting that the company had discovered a ‘bad actor’ using malware to steal Claude login sessions from users’ computers. The company reportedly wrote that unusual account activity could be a sign of this problem. For example, many users noticed their Claude limits allegedly suddenly becoming available and then being used up without their knowledge may have had their session stolen. “If your usage limits looked like they refilled and then drained while you weren't using Claude, this was likely the cause,” Anthropic reportedly said in its warning. According to the email, the company said it currently believes the problem was caused by malware already present on affected computers. It also said there was no indication that Claude installed the malware or that users caused the infection by using the service. “We have no reason to believe that this malware is related to Claude, installed through Claude, or related to anything you did with Claude,” the company said. Anthropic also said phones and tablets do not appear to have been affected by the campaign. Infostealers are malicious programs designed to quietly collect sensitive information from an infected device. They can look for saved passwords, browser cookies, login sessions and other credentials stored on a computer. Anthropic said it has identified several infostealers in the campaign, including Vidar, LummaC2, StealC, RedLine and Acreed on Windows computers. On Macs, the company identified Atomic Stealer, also known as AMOS, in a smaller number of cases. The tech gaint warned affected users that simply signing out of their Claude account will not remove the malware from their computer. “If it’s still on your computer, your next login session could be stolen the same way,” the company warned. This means users should deal with the infection before logging back into important accounts from the affected device.
