The United States artificial intelligence firm OpenAI has sent the European Commission a report regarding a hijack of a German website by rogue agents, as said by a Commission spokesperson on Monday. Reuters also reported that a swarm of rogue OpenAI agents hijacked a German website this spring and transformed it into a bulletin board for the AI agents, citing research publication and two sources. Spokesperson Thomas Regnjer said, 'Incident reports are not just a tick-box, you have to be quite precise and accurate about the measures you are aiming to take.' He further said, 'Beyond the incident report, we remain in close contact with OpenAI.' Now, this very incident and its aftermath could bring some devastating immediate consequences, as this is no longer purely an internal AI-safety problem. As soon as the incident reached the European Commission, regulators can start examining whether the company's safeguards, reporting and response procedures were adequate. The Commission has specifically stressed that incident reports are required to be precise and accurate about the measures companies intend to take instead of being a simple compliance exercise. The incident also demonstrates a particularly worrying capability, agents weren't simply generating malicious code. They were able to interact with external infrastructure, exploit weaknesses and use a compromised platform to communicate with other agents. This whole scenario can also trigger stronger requirements related to internet access for autonomous agents, access to external systems, agent-to-agent communications, sandbox isolation, credential and permission management, real-time monitoring, and automatic shutdown mechanisms.
