Cornell Rape Case: 'Voluntary Intoxication Is Not a License for Gang Rape,' NY Governor Kathy Hochul SaysOct 2, 2026, 23:50 IST
New York Governor Kathy Hochul claimed on Friday that the woman at the center of the disturbing alleged Cornell University rape case was let down repeatedly by the very people and systems meant to protect her. The woman, identified in court filings as Jane Doe, claims she was drugged and raped by multiple men at a fraternity house back in 2024. Local authorities looked into the allegations at the time, but no charges were ever filed. The case stayed mostly out of public view until last month, when Doe filed a civil lawsuit that brought the allegations back into national headlines and forced a fresh look at how things were originally handled. Speaking at a news conference Friday, Hochul said she was deeply troubled by how the original investigation unfolded. Her response was to put New York Attorney General Letitia James in charge of the case going forward, a decision she said came after losing confidence in the local prosecutor's handling of the matter, according to BBC News. One detail in particular seemed to anger Hochul: the fact that local prosecutors never personally interviewed the accuser. She didn't mince words about what that failure meant for Doe, saying the young woman had already lived through something unspeakable, only to then be let down repeatedly by institutions that were supposed to have her back. Hochul argued that someone's choice to drink or use drugs shouldn't change whether they're able to legally consent, stressing that being voluntarily intoxicated is never permission for gang rape. Cornell University, for its part, says it did hand over evidence from its own internal investigation to the district attorney, including a Snapchat group chat in which fraternity members reportedly discussed a "free" sexual encounter with Doe on the night in question.
