Google Buyouts: Alphabet Extends Voluntary Exit Offers To 5 More CountriesNov 4, 2026, 16:46 IST
The move comes at a time when Google and several other Big Tech companies are ramping up investments in AI. (File Photo) Google is expanding its voluntary employee exit programme to more international markets as the technology giant looks to manage expenses while continuing to pour billions of dollars into artificial intelligence (AI). The latest move will give employees in five additional countries an option to leave the company with severance benefits. Google's parent company, Alphabet, confirmed to Reuters that it had rolled out voluntary separation packages for employees in Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Switzerland. The expansion follows similar initiatives introduced across select divisions in the US and the UK over the past year. The move comes at a time when major technology companies are reassessing their workforce requirements and expenditure priorities amid an intensifying race to develop AI capabilities. The latest round of buyout offers is part of Google's broader effort to reorganise its workforce and streamline operations. The company said some teams had first introduced voluntary separation arrangements in 2025 before the programme was extended to additional international markets. "In 2025, some of our teams introduced a voluntary exit program with severance," a Google spokesperson said in a statement to Reuters. "This past summer, in June, we expanded this program globally in a few countries to support our important work ahead." The programme will be for employees who may no longer see themselves aligned with the company's evolving priorities. However, the initiative does not represent a blanket offer across Google's entire workforce, with certain business units excluded from previous rounds. Google's decision comes amid rising scrutiny of the massive investments being made by technology companies in AI infrastructure, products and computing capabilities. The spending spree has also unsettled investors on Wall Street, with concerns emerging over whether these investments will generate adequate returns. Microsoft has also taken steps to manage its employee-related expenses. Last week, the software major reportedly offered buyout packages to around 60,000 employees as part of its efforts to control costs. For Google, the latest voluntary exit programme signals an attempt to direct resources towards business segments considered strategically important. AI and cloud computing have emerged as major priorities, influencing both recruitment decisions and internal workforce allocation. Employees working in Google Cloud and its AI research division, DeepMind, were excluded from earlier buyout programmes, highlighting the company's intention to retain talent in these critical areas. What Google Employees In Switzerland Have Been Offered Switzerland is among the countries where Google's voluntary separation programme has attracted attention because of the company's substantial presence there. Google employs approximately 5,000 people in Switzerland, with Zurich serving as one of its key engineering centres. The company rolled out its exit packages in mid-June, giving eligible employees until mid-July to submit applications. Under the arrangement, participating employees were offered severance equivalent to one month's salary for every year of service, subject to a maximum payout of 12 months' salary.
