The jury acquitted him of two other rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault after two days of deliberations. Following the verdict, the judge told Brand that he would receive a “significant custodial term”. He was subsequently remanded in custody and is due to be sentenced on Monday. Brand had faced seven charges arising from allegations made by six women. These included three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of attempted indecent assault, which was reduced from an indecent assault charge during the trial. The allegations related to incidents between 1999 and 2009, a period during which Brand went from being an relatively unknown actor to achieving widespread fame. He later described that period as one of “staggering fame”, following his rise in the entertainment industry and relationship with singer Katy Perry. Brand firmly denied all the allegations during the proceedings. The trial also examined the circumstances in which the women came forward. All six complainants reportedly approached authorities after allegations about Brand emerged in a Channel 4 documentary in 2023 and subsequent reporting by The Times. Brand's defence argued that the documentary had “poisoned the well of justice deliberately” and “fundamentally corrupted” the accusers. His lawyers also said the coverage had a “truly devastating effect” on his life. The prosecution rejected that argument, telling the court that the documentary was not a “magic force” that had caused six separate women to reconstruct their memories. Instead, prosecutors argued that the exposé had encouraged the women to come forward with accounts of encounters with Brand that had allegedly haunted them for years. The complainants, whose identities are protected by a lifelong right to anonymity, gave evidence during the trial. Brand's wife and other witnesses also appeared before the court. The verdict brings the trial to a close after less than four weeks of proceedings. The case had initially been expected to last at least six weeks, according to Deadline, which reported daily from the courtroom through a live video feed. Brand's convictions cover four of the seven charges he faced. The jury acquitted him of two counts of rape and one count of attempted indecent assault. With the judge indicating that a significant custodial sentence is expected, Brand will remain in custody until his sentencing hearing on Monday.
