China May Use Humanoid Robots To Tackle Worker Shortage By 2035 (Image credit: AI-generated) As artificial intelligence becomes a part of our lives, most of our tedious tasks will be done by robots soon. This is the future which we imagine when we hear 'AI' and 'robotics'. But this could also be the solution to one of the biggest issues China is facing these days. As the workforce continues to shrink in the country, a new report by Barclays Plc suggests that China may use millions of humanoid robots over the next 10 years. The bank asserts robots might help by covering around 60 per cent of the worker shortage expected by 2035. The report claims that China could lose nearly 37 million workers within the next decade. This might emerge as a major issue for the country’s huge manufacturing sector, which is the driver of the economy. China’s population is getting older, and fewer babies are being born. The country recorded its lowest birth rate in several decades last year. Moreover, the number of old people in the country is increasing. These figures raise concern about the demographics in China, as the share of working-age people has also fallen sharply. The report mentions that this trend is likely to put pressure on factories and businesses that rely on a large number of workers. As per the report, China may bring 24 million humanoid robots working the factories by 2035 if the development continues at this pace. These humanoids could be deployed in warehouses, factories and delivery centres where mundane work is common. Barclays notes that robots may also help improve productivity and reduce the impact of worker shortages. It is noteworthy that the bank pointed out that these figures rely on optimistic expectations. The plan depends on fast developments in robot technology and large-scale production. What lies ahead is humanoids slowly moving from sci-fi to real-world workers and China seems to be leading this shift.
