Claude Expands Beyond Chatbots, Enters Drug Discovery Race Backed By Ex-Google CEO Startup (Image credit: AI-generated) With the artificial intelligence boom, it eventually became a part of our lives. From accounting to coding, AI is being used in various sectors today. AI has also become a major assistant to doctors and medical researchers, helping them to analyse the patient reports and spot symptoms. After Neuralink and Meta, now Anthropic is working to integrate its scientific AI models with SandboxAQ for AI-based drug discovery. SandboxAQ is chaired by the ex-CEO of Google, Eric Schmidt. The startup has raised nearly $950 million from investors. Notably, the startup's partnership with Anthropic lets researchers access the drug discovery tools through a conversational interface. As per TechCrunch, the startup developed what it labelled as 'large quantitative models' or 'LQMs'. These AI models are trained to spot patterns in the text, unlike the conventional AI tools. These models are 'physics-grounded'. In simple words, they are built using the basic rules of physics. Moreover, these AI models can reportedly perform quantum chemistry calculations and could simulate molecular dynamics and microkinetics, which are simple processes to understand how chemical reactions work at the molecular level. Basically, this tech will help the experts to predict how molecules are expected to function before actual laboratory experiments start. This will eventually help the medical experts to save costs, time and the difficulties that come with discovering new materials and drugs. It is noteworthy that the increasing use of AI in the medical field and healthcare could bring a major impact on the industry. It can significantly change how medicines are tested, discovered and delivered in the future. From identifying symptoms to assessing early stages of diseases, AI is likely to reduce the time required for medical advancements that conventionally take years of lab work. However, concerns around data privacy, accuracy, regulation and overdependence on AI raise alarming situations as AI shapes the next stage of evolving healthcare.
