Ishan Kishan Suffers Injury Scare, Abhishek Sharma Takes Break From Batting
India suffered an injury scare two days before the first T20I against Afghanistan as Ishan Kishan hurt his back. Kishan was facing Navdeep Saini in the nets when he suffered the back issue. He was attended to by the team's physio immediately after he complained of pain. The back issue cut short his net session and he left early. Kishan has cemented his spot in the middle order since his return and he is raring to continue his form. He made a surprise return to the 2026 T20 World Cup squad and has been unstoppable since then. Abhishek Sharma travelled with the team for the session, but he took a break from batting. He recently played for Amritsar Soormas in the Shere-e-Punjab T20 league. Abhishek is confirmed to open the innings in the series. Sanju Samson, who has made his return for the away series, was in sublime touch during the net session. He is likely to reclaim his opening spot. All eyes were on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi during the practice session. The 15-year-old struggled against Jasprit Bumrah and was also dismissed once in the nets. Bumrah will play his first T20I since the 2026 T20 World Cup final. India have an optional practice session on Saturday (September 12). Shreyas Iyer will lead India in India for first time. The right-handed batter replaced Suryakumar Yadav as the T20I captain after the 2026 T20 World Cup. The selectors took the bold call to remove Suryakumar from the captaincy despite him leading India to a title win. Iyer, who has proven himself in IPL, replaced him. He made his captaincy debut against Ireland in June. Iyer-led India lost both T20Is against Ireland. England also whitewashed India and defeated them 4-0. India finally registered their first win under Iyer against Zimbabwe. The visiting team won the three-match T20I series 3-0. After the Afghanistan series, Iyer will lead India in the Asian Games.
