Malinga has been connected to MI for a long time, through several stages. During the 2018 IPL season, he moved to the support staff as a Bowling Mentor following an illustrious 11-year playing stint with MI. Prior to the IPL 2024 season, he officially succeeded Shane Bond as the main team's fast-bowling coach. Prior to the IPL 2025 season, Mhambrey joined as an extra bowling coach. After serving as the fielding coach for three years, Hopkinson resigned in 2024. “Mumbai Indians today announced that Lasith Malinga, Paras Mhambrey and Carl Hopkinson will be moving on from their respective roles in the men’s team coaching setup, thanking each of them for their commitment, contribution and service to the franchise," the franchise said in a statement. “Mumbai Indians extend their heartfelt gratitude to Lasith, Paras and Carl for their contributions to the team and the wider MI family. Their commitment, the relationships they have built and the memories they have helped create will always be part of our journey. We wish each of them the very best in their future endeavours." The reorganisation of the coaching staff follows the promotion of batting coach Kieron Pollard to head coach, taking Mahela Jayawardene's place. Prior to the IPL 2027 auction, it is currently anticipated that the team will hire new instructors for the batting, bowling, and fielding positions. The five-time champions would be hoping to bounce back from the slump in the recent years and put on a great performance in the upcoming season.
