'Did Not Know Anyone Else, The Message Had To Go Through': Dhoni, Mandhana Reveal Post WC Win Interaction
Smriti Mandhana revealed MS Dhoni messaged her after India's World Cup victory |Courtesy - Instagram (@SmritiMandhana/ICC) While MS Dhoni remains largely inactive on social media and only posts on rare occasion, he still made sure to ensure he congratulate the Indian Women's cricket team after they won the 2025 Women's World Cup on home soil last year in November. The Women in Blue's newly appointed captain revealed she received a message from the 2011 World Cup-winning skipper after the historic triumph. Dhoni revealed he did not have any other player's number apart from Mandhana in the team, with whom he had shot an advertisement. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) star claimed he emphasized to the then vice-captain to congratulate the entire team from his team. "He actually did send me a message after the World Cup win. And I know that he doesn't use his phone a lot and I was very happy that he actually put on WhatsApp to congratulate all of us," said Mandhana in an event today. "I Didn't know anyone else from her team, so I was like, you know, the message needs to go through. And we had just shot before that, so I was like, let me send a message to Smriti. And like I mentioned, you know, please wish everyone who has been part of the side, because it's a big thing. And if you look at it, it changes how Indian women's cricket moves forward—not only the fact that you have brought a big trophy for the country, but the fact that these girls paved the way for future ladies, you know, how they would look at cricket and cricket as a profession when it comes to women's cricket. So I think that was a big difference," Dhoni added. The 2025 Women's World Cup triumph was the first (and to date the only) senior ICC Women's event that India has won. Mandhana was the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament (highest for India) behind South African captain Laura Wolvaardt. The left-handed batter made 434 runs in 9 innings with one century and two half-centuries. India defeated South Africa in the summit clash at Navi Mumbai's DY Patil Stadium after beating the defending champions Australia in the semi-final.
