Delhi University May Introduce Entrance Test For One-Year PG Admissions From 2027-28: ReportsNov 4, 2026, 16:38 IST
DU may hold entrance test for one-year PG courses from 2027-28 academic session The Delhi University (DU) on Tuesday reportedly told the Delhi High Court that it is mulling a proposal to conduct an entrance test from the next academic session for admissions to its one-year postgraduate (PG) programme. The one-year master’s programme was introduced by Delhi University in the 2026-27 academic year to accomodate students who completed the four-year undergraduate programme under the National Education Policy (NEP) framework, instead of the usual hree-year undergraduate degree. Delhi University admits students to its two-year PG courses through CUET PG, but the one year PG course had no entrance exam. This one-year course, as per an Indian Express report, instead followed another priority: candidates holding a four-year Honours degree with Research or Entrepreneurship in the relevant subject are placed in the first priority category, P1. Those with a four-year multidisciplinary degree and a Major in the subject are placed in P2. Since P1 applicants are considered ahead of P2 candidates, an Honours graduate with a lower CGPA may get preference over a multidisciplinary degree holder with a higher score. Due to this, several students who were enrolled in this one-year PG degree knocked Delhi HC's doors arguing that the admission criteria was “discriminatory”. Responding to the pleas, the university reportedly has told the HC that it is stretched to its maximum capacity due to this one-year PG programme. This batch added 6,147 seats, over half of them (3,340) in its open school, on top of the 12,000 seats in its two-year PG programme. “This increase has already pushed the University to its maximum capacity in terms of accommodation, infrastructure availability, and teachers’ strength. Offering a 1-year PG without additional resources has already added a significant load to the University, beyond its capacity," DU registrar Vikas Gupta was quoted by The Indian Express. He also added that the varsity has taken note of students' grievances and is considering a proposal to conduct an entrance test from 2027-28 academic session. If the plan is adopted, admissions for these courses will be finalised only on the basis of this entrance test score.
