Drone Strike Triggers Huge Blaze at Iraq’s Lanaz Refinery (Video:X) A drone strike sparked a major fire at the Lanaz refinery in the northern Iraqi city of Erbil on Saturday, forcing authorities to suspend operations at the facility. Videos circulating online showed large flames and thick black smoke billowing from the refinery site. According to The Jerusalem Post, officials from the Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Natural Resources told Reuters early Sunday that the blaze had been brought under control, though refinery operations remain halted. Provincial officials had earlier said the facility would stay shut until the fire caused by the drone strike was fully extinguished and authorities were able to assess the extent of the damage. Meanwhile, pro-Iran militias operating under the banner of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq have previously claimed responsibility for drone and missile attacks targeting NATO bases in Erbil as well as sites in Baghdad. On Saturday, a strike on the United States Embassy Baghdad caused a fire and damage within the compound. The incident marked the second time the embassy has been targeted since the United States and Israel began strikes on Iran. Several drones have also been intercepted near Baghdad International Airport since hostilities escalated. Early Friday, another drone attack targeted the airport complex, which includes a military installation and a US diplomatic facility.
