Over 44,000 Reserved Category Students Enrolled in DU; Rahul Gandhi’s Allegation Denied
Countering the Leader of the Opposition of Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi's caste-based claim, the University of Delhi once again took to its official 'X' (Twitter) handle to share the official data, which indicated the admission of more than 44,000 reserved category candidates in both the undergraduate and postgraduate courses for the academic year 2025-26. Of these, a total of 37,618 students were enrolled in the UG courses, while 6,400 were admitted to the PG courses. The response follows Rahul Gandhi's claim over the university using interviews as a way to filter out students belonging to the marginalized communities. Refuting the allegations, DU clarified that it admits students on the basis of their Common University Entrance Test (CUET) scores, and the standard admission criteria don't require a personality test for the majority of UG and PG programs. "The University of Delhi implements all its statutory mandates in the true spirit of the Constitution of India, as clearly reflected in our transparent admission and recruitment processes. We urge the Leader of Opposition to refrain from making unsubstantiated statements. Such remarks undermine the healthy learning environment at the University," the official tweet reads. The controversy erupted when the opposition leader visited an event in Lucknow to mark the birth anniversary of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) founder Kanshi Ram. Addressing the public, he claimed that DU eliminates students from disadvantaged groups from offering admission. "I had gone to the Delhi University. Interview is just a way to eliminate students. They ask what your caste is, and then you fail in the interview," he said, according to reports. Dismissing the claims, the university issued a clarification on March 13, stating, “If the Leader of Opposition was referring to recruitments (such as faculty positions), the University in the recent past has recruited thousands of teachers across all categories. We strongly object to such comments, as they create a non-conducive environment in the University. The Leader of Opposition should have verified the facts before making such a statement,” DU posted on its official X account.
