Did US Use UAE Territory To Strike Iran’s Kharg Island? Abu Dhabi Calls Tehran 'Confused'
Fire and plumes of smoke rise from an oil facility in Fujairah, UAE, on Saturday (March 14) The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has dismissed Iran's claims that the US used the UAE territory to attack Tehran’s Kharg Island. The Kharg island, home to the main terminal handling Iran’s oil exports, was targeted in a US strike, with President Donald Trump saying that the military sites on the island were "obliterated". Following the strikes, Iran had threatened strikes on UAE's non-US assets. UAE's presidential advisor, Anwar Gargash, refuted Iran's accusations, calling it "a part of a confused policy that has misdirected its aim, lost its compass, and forsaken wisdom." He said that the UAE has the right to defend itself against Iran's ongoing strikes, but chooses to exercise restraint. The UAE has the right to self-defence in the face of this terrorist aggression imposed upon it, yet it continues to prioritise reason and logic, maintaining restraint and seeking an exit for Iran and the region," he wrote on X. Iran has alleged that the UAE's "ports, docks and hideouts" were used to launch strikes on Kharg Island. Iran's Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said, "Last night they attacked Kharg Island and Abu Musa Island with the artillery-rocket system HIMARS, which is a short-range rocket system," claiming that the rockets were launched from locations in the UAE, including Ras Al Khaimah and an area close to Dubai. "They launched these rockets from the soil of our neighbours. It is crystal clear they are using our neighbours' territory to attack us, and this is absolutely unacceptable," he said. Iran urged people to evacuate the Middle East’s busiest port and two others in the United Arab Emirates on Saturday as it openly threatened a neighbouring country’s non-US assets for the first time as its war with the United States and Israel entered a third week. Hours later, there was no sign of an attack on Dubai’s Jebel Ali port — the Mideast’s busiest — or the Khalifa port in Abu Dhabi. But debris from an intercepted Iranian drone hitting an oil facility sparked a fire at the third port, in Fujairah. Trump announced Friday through a social media post that the US has ‘obliterated’ military targets on Iran’s Kharg Island, warning that oil infrastructure there could be next. Kharg Island, a small coral outcrop about 21 miles off Iran's southern coast, serves as the principal terminal through which most of the country's crude oil exports are shipped. “Moments ago, at my direction, the United States Central Command executed one of the most powerful bombing raids in the History of the Middle East, and totally obliterated every MILITARY target in Iran’s crown jewel, Kharg Island,” Trump said. He added: “For reasons of decency, I have chosen NOT to wipe out the Oil Infrastructure on the Island. However, should Iran, or anyone else, do anything to interfere with the Free and Safe Passage of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz, I will immediately reconsider this decision.” Following this, Iran warned that all the oil fields and related infrastructure across the West Asian region will be on target is its oil infrastructure is attacked. The spokesperson for the Central Headquarters of Khatam al-Anbiya said that if Iran’s oil infrastructure is attacked, “all the oil and energy infrastructure belonging to oil companies across the region that have American shares or cooperate with the United States will be destroyed and turned into a pile of ashes," as reported by Al Jazeera citing Iranian media.
