According to recent reports, HBO Max has officially entered India, marking its first rollout in the country. Instead of launching as a standalone app, the Warner Bros. Discovery platform is being introduced through a partnership with JioHotstar, backed by Disney. As per a report in Deadline, a dedicated HBO Max section has gone live on JioHotstar, bringing together a wide range of content under one roof. This includes upcoming titles like Euphoria Season 3, House of the Dragon Season 3, and the Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone series, along with Max Originals and content from Warner Bros. and DC Studios. It is interesting to note that this is the first time HBO Max’s full library is being made available in one place in India. Earlier, JioHotstar streamed HBO content through a licensing agreement spread over several years. Warner Bros. Discovery had been hesitant to launch HBO Max in India before, mostly because it is hard to do business in a market that is very competitive and price-sensitive. James Gibbons, the president of Asia Pacific, said in 2024 that India was one of the hardest places to do business because of its size and profitability. Now, Gibbons says the company sees strong potential in the Indian market, especially with JioHotstar’s reach and understanding of local audiences. He added that this partnership will help expand the presence of HBO Max’s global brands and connect more deeply with viewers in India. In India, HBO Max will be available as an add-on subscription on JioHotstar, starting at Rs 49 per month, and will include access to the platform’s international content library.
