After Saina Nehwal, Riddhima Kapoor Sahni and others, Bollywood actress Yami Gautam lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking a "historic step" to empower women. The Haq actress, known for her women-centric projects, often speaks up on social causes. In a video, she welcomed the move and said it would shift women from the sidelines to the heart of decision-making. She added that stronger representation in Parliament would make governance more inclusive and empathetic. Yami Gautam LAUDS PM Modi For Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam Yami said, "Nari Shakti Vandan is a historic milestone for democracy. It empowers women to move from the margins to central policy-making. When women lead in parliament, governance becomes even more inclusive, effective and compassionate. Viksit Bharat 2047 is now within reach, strengthened by the power and dignity of women." Before her, Bollywood star Ranbir Kapoor's sister Riddhima Kapoor Sahni also hailed the move. The Fabulous Lives vs Bollywood Wives said, "Modi ji, Nari Shakti Vandan ke liye dhanyawad. Humare baare me sochne ke liye, dil se dhanyawad. Yeh kanoon mahilaon ko aage bahdne ka mauka dega. Unhe ek nayi pehchaan aur samman milegi. Ab mahilayen asaani se rakh payenge, mazboot hongi aur humara desh aage badhega (Modi ji, thank you for the Nari Shakti Vandan. Thank you from the heart for thinking about us. This law will give women a chance to move forward. They will gain a new identity and respect. Now women will be able to progress more easily, become stronger, and our country will move ahead)." Meanwhile, former badminton player Saina Nehwal said that the Nari Shakti Vandan Act is not just a law, but a strong initiative to give women the right to equality in the country's parliament. For those unversed, the act was passed in September 2023. Commonly known as the Women's Reservation Act, it refers to the provisions for maternity leave, maintenance allowance, and rights in parents' property. The law gives one-third of the seats to women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies. With the new changes, the total Lok Sabha seats may go up to 816, out of which 273 will be reserved for women. This 33% reservation was introduced through a constitutional amendment in 2023. Earlier, the rule could only be applied after the delimitation process following the 2027 Census, meaning it wouldn’t take effect before 2034. To start it from the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, the government is planning changes to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam and has called a special session to pass them.
