Kerala Orders Schools to Stop Summer Classes, Violators to Face Action
Kerala General Education Minister V. Sivankutty on Wednesday, April 15, issued a directive for schools stating that schools cannot conduct special classes during the summer vacation and warned that strict action will be taken against those who violate the rules. In an official statement, he said that under the Kerala Education Rules, the summer break for students runs from the last working day of March until May, and schools must adhere to this schedule. Holding classes during this period would be considered a violation, and institutions found doing so will face action. Referring to the ongoing heatwave, the minister also pointed out that even working hours for labourers have been revised due to extreme conditions. Forcing children to attend school in such weather, he said, would go against their fundamental and human rights. He pointed out that extreme heat can pose serious health risks for children in school settings. Referring to earlier directions from the Child Rights Commission and court orders, Sivankutty said no one has the authority to interfere with students’ vacation. The directive applies to all schools across the state, including government-aided, CBSE, and ICSE institutions. The minister also noted that holding classes during the break could harm children’s physical and mental well-being and instructed education officials to closely monitor the situation and take action against any violations. Meanwhile, amid rising temperatures in Chhattisgarh, the state government has decided to advance the summer vacation for school students. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said the move was taken in view of the intense heat and growing impact of heatwaves across the state. According to the announcement made on April 15, summer vacations in schools will now begin earlier than usual, starting from April 2. CM also added that the decision has been taken to ensure students stay safe during this severe heat and do not suffer from a heat stroke. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heatwave conditions are likely to impact several parts of Chhattisgarh starting April 17. The department has also warned of a significant rise in temperatures between April 17 and April 20.
