Authorities in Louisiana have released further details about a mass shooting in Shreveport, identifying victims and outlining the sequence of events. Police say Shamar Elkins carried out the attack on Sunday, killing eight children before being shot dead by deputies following a police chase. The Caddo Parish coroner’s office named the children who died as Jayla Elkins, 3; Shayla Elkins, 5; Kayla Pugh, 6; Layla Pugh, 6; Markaydon Pugh, 10; Sariahh Snow, 11; Khedarrion Snow, 6; and Braylon Snow, 5. Authorities said two adult women were also shot and remain in critical condition. One of them, Shaneiqua Pugh, 34, has been identified as the suspect’s wife. The other woman is the mother of three of Elkins’ children. According to Christopher Bordelon, Elkins first shot Pugh before turning his gun on the children. Police said Pugh had called emergency services when Elkins entered the home and began shooting. A second call was made as she and one of the children attempted to escape via the roof. Wayne Smith said: "One minute later, the caller advised that she and her children had fled from the roof and were now in the backyard; 6:01 a.m. officers arrived on the scene." Pugh was described by police as having "very serious injuries", while the second woman was reported to have "life-threatening" injuries. Officials said the shooting followed a domestic dispute linked to the couple’s separation, which had been due to be addressed in court on Monday. Public records cited by media reports indicate that Elkins and Pugh had been married for around two years and had four children together, all of whom were among those killed. Members of Elkins’ family have described him as struggling in the period leading up to the attack. His stepfather, Marcus Jackson, told the New York Times: "I told him, ‘You can beat stuff, man. I don’t care what you’re going through, you can beat it." He added that Elkins had replied: "Some people don’t come back from their demons." Family members also said he had expressed distress about the divorce in social media posts. Authorities have not released further details about the motive beyond the domestic dispute.
