US Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer stepped down from her Cabinet position amid mounting scrutiny over misconduct allegations involving her and senior aides. The White House said she is leaving to take up a role in the private sector, with communications director Steven Cheung stating she had done a “phenomenal job.” Her resignation comes as a Department of Labor Inspector General investigation, led by Anthony D’Esposito, examines claims of workplace misconduct, misuse of taxpayer funds, and inappropriate relationships. The controversy has also drawn attention to members of her security team, including Brian Sloan. Brian Sloan was a member of Chavez-DeRemer’s security detail and became a central figure in the ongoing investigation. He was placed on leave as part of the probe into alleged misconduct within the Labor Department. Sloan was accused of being involved in a romantic relationship with the Labor secretary, a claim that became a key focus of the investigation. He resigned in March rather than cooperating with investigators. His attorney criticized the inquiry, calling it a “vindictive, politically motivated investigation” and accusing the Inspector General’s office of “repeated, illegal, intentional leaks.” The attorney said Sloan intends to pursue legal remedies to restore his reputation. The investigation into Chavez-DeRemer includes several allegations related to her conduct and leadership: The probe also triggered internal upheaval within the department. Chief of Staff Jihun Han and Deputy Chief of Staff Rebecca Wright resigned under pressure, while advance team director Melissa Robey was placed on leave. Several others left the department during the course of the investigation. Chavez-DeRemer has denied wrongdoing and is cooperating with the investigation, while the White House had earlier defended her, calling the allegations false.
