Police in Greenbelt and nearby College Park responded to reports of gunfire early Friday morning after witnesses said a suspect fired multiple shots from a dark-colored sedan before fleeing the area. According to the University of Maryland Police Department, officers were dispatched to Lakeland Road and Rhode Island Avenue near the University of Maryland campus shortly before 1 AM after reports of “sound of gunfire.” Witnesses told police the suspect fired three shots into the air before driving east on Campus Drive toward Kenilworth Avenue and away from campus. As the investigation expanded across northern Prince George’s County, Prince George's County Police Department confirmed that one person had been taken into custody and a weapon had been recovered. Authorities later said there were at least two victims connected to the shooting incidents. Both victims were transported to the hospital, with one reported to be in critical condition. Police added that investigators do not believe there are additional suspects involved, though the case remains active. The Greenbelt Police Department said officers were assisting county police in an investigation tied to a suspected armed carjacking that occurred outside Greenbelt city limits. Authorities said the incident ended near Edmonston Road and Greenbelt Road. As a precaution, Greenbelt Middle School and Dora Kennedy French Immersion School delayed dismissals while officers were stationed at the campuses to ensure the safety of students and staff. Police said there is currently no indication of an ongoing threat to the public. Several other schools in the area were also placed on lockdown earlier in the day, including Beacon Heights Elementary School, Berwyn Heights Elementary School, Paint Branch Elementary School, Greenbelt Elementary School, Bladensburg High School and Eleanor Roosevelt High School. Officials have not yet released additional details about the suspected carjacking, the motive behind the shootings, or whether the victims were specifically targeted.
