Bluesky, the social networking platform by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, has confirmed that its recent day-long outage was caused by a DDoS attack. The platform was disrupted for around 24 hours as attackers flooded its systems with unwanted internet traffic. The X rival confirmed the cyberattack in a post and apologised to users for the service problems. "We apologize for yesterday’s service problems. Bluesky experienced a DDoS attack—a flood of junk traffic meant to knock servers offline—over a period of 24 hours. We have upgraded our defenses in response, and we continue to monitor the situation," Bluesky said in a post. Bluesky said the attack involved a large amount of junk traffic designed to overwhelm its servers and take the platform offline. The company added that it has upgraded its defences following the incident and is continuing to monitor the situation. A DDoS attack means that a website or online service receives an unusually large amount of traffic at the same time. The traffic is not genuine user activity. Instead, attackers use networks of compromised or hijacked devices to send huge numbers of requests to a service. This can put heavy pressure on servers and make websites slow, inaccessible or completely unavailable. Bluesky has not revealed who was behind the latest attack or shared technical details about the size of the traffic involved. However, security researchers discussing the incident on the IFIN public forum have reported claims of responsibility from Iran-backed attackers, according to TechCrunch. These claims have not been independently confirmed by Bluesky. The latest incident is also not the first major DDoS attack faced by Bluesky this year. In April, the platform suffered repeated service interruptions after what the social media platform described as a sophisticated DDoS attack. At the time, users reported problems accessing feeds, notifications, threads and search.
