Jamui: A political controversy erupted in Bihar after a video went viral showing a young couple in Jamui district being harassed by several men, with the Opposition targeting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led state government) over the law and order situation. The Congress called it a "nerve-wracking" incident and demanded answers from the state government. Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reminding him about his promise of " 'women's honor'. Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi condemned the incident and sought answers from the Bihar government over the safety of girls in the state. "The video from Jamui, Bihar, is deeply disturbing. Two Class 10 students were stopped on a road. Harassed. Humiliated. Molested. A young girl, hands folded, begged to be let go while goons groped her and dragged her away. Who gave these men the right to behave like this? This is not "culture." It is patriarchy: the belief that any man can police a girl's body, her movement, and her choices.," Gandhi said. “When control is mistaken for culture, and such attitudes are normalised by Andhbhakts, mobs start believing they are the law. Every individual in that video must be identified and prosecuted under POCSO, and justice must be swift. And if the incident happened on September 19th, why are the culprits not behind bars yet? And the Bihar government must answer why a girl is not safe on a public road at 7 pm?” he added. Senior Congress leader Pawan Khera said that the Saffron Party is the "worst enemy of women". Taking a dig at PM Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Congress leader said, "The incident in Jamui is truly nerve-wracking. The girl appears to be in her late teens, and after an experience like this, she is scarred and deeply traumatised, with consequences that may stay with her for years. And the credit for this goes to the Prime Minister and the Home Minister." "Had they taken strict action when young women were assaulted by so-called policemen during student protests in Delhi and set a clear example that those who violate the dignity of women will be severely punished, perhaps the incident in Jamui, Bihar, would not have taken place," he added. "Instead, the BJP is among the worst enemies of women. It speaks of grand ideas like women’s empowerment and announces unconditional cash transfers to women before elections," Khera noted. The AAP in its X post targeted PM Modi over the incident. "Modi Ji, what happened to your promise of 'women's honor'?" the Arvind Kejriwal-led party said. "In your BJP-ruled state of Bihar, a daughter's dignity is being torn to shreds, and you're sitting there, mum, as a clam. The BJP government is a stain on this country," the AAP added. The Prashant Kishor-led Jan Suraaj Party (JSV) demanded the arrest of all the accused involved in the incident. JSV leader Anup Maithil said that the law and order in the state is worse than "jungle raj. "The government should arrest the accused who committed the inhuman act with a girl in Jamui within 24 hours, or be prepared for protests. After the BJP's Chief Minister took office, the law and order situation in Bihar has deteriorated to worse than jungle raj," Maithil said. The BJP is yet to respond to the Opposition's allegations. The story will be updated with the BJP’s reaction. Posts circulating with the video claim that the boy and the girl had stepped out for an evening walk when they were harassed by the mob. The three accused involved in the incident have been arrested by the police.
