Jagseer Singh alias Jagga allegedly consumed poison outside the Sangrur Mini Secretariat after raising concerns over drug sales in his village. A man from Namol village allegedly consumed a poisonous substance outside the Deputy Commissioner's office in Sangrur after accusing local authorities of failing to act against the alleged sale of drugs in his village. The incident has triggered a fresh political row in Punjab, coming days after the death of another Sangrur resident, Gulzar Singh, who had also raised the issue of drug menace. The man, identified as Jagseer Singh alias Jagga, was taken to Sangrur government hospital after the incident and later referred to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala for further treatment. Reports said he had allegedly been raising the issue of drug sales in Namol and had approached local authorities with complaints. According to Jagga's family, the dispute intensified after he allegedly raised the issue of drug sales in the village. They claimed that some people associated with the village panchayat confronted him after he returned home and later allegedly entered his house, damaged property and assaulted him. The family has also alleged that Jagga had videos related to the alleged sale of drugs and that there had been earlier attempts to raise the issue with the authorities. His friend Manjinder Singh claimed that CCTV cameras at the house were damaged and that Jagga and his family were assaulted. These allegations are part of the ongoing police investigation. Police have registered a case in connection with the alleged assault and damage to property. According to the police version provided to local media, Jagga had earlier threatened suicide and a daily diary report had been registered. Police said his statement would be recorded once doctors allow investigators to question him. Sangrur SSP Ravjot Kaur Grewal, however, said that the Jagga had multiple cases registered against him. Grewal said that the police had found nine cases already registered against Jagga, including an NDPS case, and that another case was registered against him this year. Meanwhile, Jagga's alleged suicde has triggered sharp political reactions. BJP leader Ravneet Singh Bittu accused the Punjab government of harassing people who raise their voice against drugs, while Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa questioned the government's claims on tackling the drug menace. Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia also linked the incident to the earlier Gulzar Singh case. The latest incident comes shortly after Gulzar Singh, a Sangrur resident, died after allegedly consuming poison following a controversy over his public questioning of Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema about the drug problem. Police had registered a case against five people, including a village sarpanch, in connection with his death. The Punjab and Haryana High Court has since sought a status report on the investigation, while the National Commission for Scheduled Castes has also sought a report from the Punjab government. AAP leaders have rejected allegations that the government is shielding drug traffickers.
