Odisha Schools Closed in 8 Districts Due to Heavy Rainfall (Source: Canva) Schools and anganwadi centres across eight districts of Odisha have been directed to remain closed due to inclement weather conditions. As reported by TOI, the affected districts are Nabarangpur, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Ganjam, Gajapati, Koraput, Khurda and Malkangiri. The decision to announce a shutdown has been taken keeping the safety of students in mind. In case of queries pertaining to closures or reopening, students and their parents can directly contact their respective school administration. Schools in Ganjam and Gajapati districts also observed holidays on September 22 and 23, 2026. The closure of educational institutions has been ordered as a precautionary measure amid incessant rainfall in these regions due to the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal, with the state government making all necessary preparations to deal with its impact. According to IANS, the deep depression, moving west-northwest at 7 kmph, is currently centred about 30 km south-southwest of Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and 160 km southwest of Gopalpur. IMD sources said the system is expected to maintain its west-northwestward movement and cross the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur, to the southwest of Kalingapatnam, within the next three to four hours. The weather department has sounded a red alert for Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Koraput and Malkangiri, as heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall, is expected in these regions. At the same time, heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely in Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Boudh, Subarnapur, Bargarh, Balangir and Nuapada districts. Earlier, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday inspected the state’s preparedness against the prevailing weather conditions triggered by the deep depression. He stressed Odisha’s policy of ‘zero casualty’, directing the concerned authorities to make their lives and property a top priority.
