Sensex, Nifty Close Higher After 8-Week Losing Streak; Is Rebound Sustainable?Oct 5, 2026, 15:37 IST
The Sensex and Nifty closed higher on Monday, snapping an eight-week losing streak as investors tracked oil prices and global market cues. The Nifty gained 133.80 points, 0.6 percent and closed at 22,555.75 and the Sensex gained 472.77 points, 0.66 percent and closed at 72,382.47. All sectoral indices ended the trading day with significant gains, the Nifty IT also ended on a flat note. The rebound offered relief to investors after recent market weakness, but uncertainty remains amid volatile crude oil prices. In the previous week, equity markets had marked 8 consecutive weeks of decline for the first time in 25 years. Experts remain divided on whether the gains witnessed today mark the start of a sustainable recovery or are merely a short-term uptick. Independent market analyst, Ambareesh Baliga told Times Now Digital, "markets have certainly bounced back in today's session, however we don't know if the bounce back will be sustainable or not." G. Chokkalingam Head of Research at Equinomics Research said, "overall markets are likely to remain weak this week. The southwest monsoon ended the 2026 season with all-India cumulative rainfall at 87% of the long-period average (LPA), the lowest since 2015. Due to poor rainfall and elevated oil prices, inflation is expected to rise further; FIIs sold Rs 44,013 crore of Indian equities in September and they are likely to continue to sell Indian equities in October as well. India's primary market is witnessing an unprecedented boom, with the mainboard IPO pipeline hitting a staggering Rs.3.86 lakh crore - nearly 3.5 times the Rs.1.10 lakh crore raised through 84 issues in 2026 so far; hence, the market is likely to remain weak in the short-term. However, we expect stock-specific rally to continue in the small & mid-cap space. We expect both DIIs and retail investors to focus on small & mid-cap (SMC) stocks as FIIs continue to sell stocks here especially in the large cap stocks. Any substantial buying by DIIs and retail investors would only facilitate selling of equities by the FIIs. Hence, we anticipate a stock-specific rally to continue in the SMC segment in the short-term."
