New York AG Under Pressure to Recuse Herself From Cornell 7 Case After Bias Allegations
A legal watchdog group has filed an ethics complaint against New York Attorney General Letitia James. It says she showed bias in a high-profile case involving members of a Cornell University fraternity, and it wants her taken off the investigation. The National Legal and Policy Center, based in Washington, D.C., filed the nine-page complaint with the Attorney Grievance Committee of New York’s state Supreme Court. The group is going after a post James wrote on X on Sept. 28. In it, she said that what the young woman had been forced to endure was “horrific and unacceptable,” and told survivors they are not alone. Two days later, James was named special prosecutor to reopen the investigation into an alleged gang rape in 2024 at the Chi Phi fraternity house at Cornell. The men accused in the case are known as the “Cornell 7.” The complaint argues that the post revealed which side James believed before her investigation even started. It says she must step aside to protect the fairness of the process, and that public comments like hers from the state’s top law enforcement officer break New York’s rules of professional conduct. If she will not recuse herself, the group says, she should be removed. A spokesperson for her office told the Post that the office is committed to a thorough review based only on the facts, the evidence and the law.
