'Time for Ukraine to Get New President': Trump Turns On Zelenskyy After Diesel Deal With PutinOct 11, 2026, 00:01 IST
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump. President Donald Trump said Saturday that Ukraine should replace its leader, arguing that Volodymyr Zelenskyy has failed to bring the war with Russia to an end. His comments came on a day when Russian attacks killed at least 20 people in Ukraine. Speaking at the White House, Trump said Ukraine should find someone who can strike a deal, and claimed Zelenskyy never seems to do it. He also looked back at the start of the war. Had he been president in 2022, Trump said, the fighting would never have begun, and he blamed incompetence for it. Trump went on to say Zelenskyy has lost 30% of the country. He also said more than 2 million people have been killed. In his words, it is time for Ukraine to get a new president. "You know what I suggest? I suggest they get a new leader who could make a deal because he could've made many deals and for some reason he never does... I think it's time for Ukraine to get a new President," Trump said. "We told Zelensky, 'You can do whatever you want to Russia, but don't hit the refineries because that's a world problem.' And what does he do? He goes and hits the diesel fuel. He better damn well stop," Trump added. According to a report from the Financial Times, Trump envoy Steve Witkoff has informed Ukrainians that the US would cut off intelligence sharing if they continue to hit Russian oil refineries. Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials said Russian aerial bombs hit residential buildings in the Zaporizhzhia region on Saturday. At least 20 people died, including three children, according to the State Emergency Service. At least 18 others were hurt. Russia also hit Kyiv with missiles during the day. Mayor Vitalii Klitschko said four people were wounded. AP reports that the two countries are trading long-range strikes while their armies stay mostly stuck along the front line, more than four and a half years after Russia’s full-scale invasion. Ukraine is having a hard time stopping the growing barrage. More than 60 people have died in Russian attacks over the past four days. Zelenskyy tied the two events together in a post on X. He said Russia had thanked Washington for easing diesel sanctions by dropping five glide bombs on homes in Zaporizhzhia. In his view, any loosening of pressure tells Moscow it can keep bombing cities. Later, in a Telegram post, Zelenskyy said Russia is choosing war. He argued that every extra billion dollars Moscow earns from exports helps buy weapons parts, upgrade drones, build missiles and recruit mercenaries. Russia will stop only when its ability to fight shrinks, he said, and he called on the U.S., Europe and other partners to limit that ability.
