According to the complaint, Kamal Grewal owns a music company called JP Films, which operates from Sarabha Nagar in Ludhiana. On October 20, several missed calls and voice messages were received on the company's official mobile number. The singer was performing at a Dussehra celebration in Patiala at the time and could not attend to the messages. When Grewal listened to the voice messages the following day, he allegedly heard a caller identifying himself as Gilli Rana and claiming to be associated with the Rohit Godara gang. The caller reportedly demanded Rs 5 crore and asked the singer to call him back immediately. The caller also allegedly warned Grewal that if he failed to meet the demand, his stage shows would be stopped and his singing career would be destroyed. He threatened that the singer would not be allowed to organise stage performances or continue his musical activities. Two more threatening voice messages were subsequently received from the same mobile number. Following this, Grewal filed an online complaint with the police, detailing the extortion demand and threats. The complaint further stated that Kamal Grewal received two more calls from an international number on November 1 while he was at his office in Sarabha Nagar. However, he was unavailable at that time and noticed the missed calls only the following afternoon. After discussing the matter with his family members and close associates, the singer decided to approach the Ludhiana police. Grewal reportedly expressed apprehensions about threats to his life and property and requested the authorities to take action against Gilli Rana and other alleged members of the gang.
