He further explained the reason behind choosing to back the crime thriller. “Stories, especially cinema, are a very powerful medium to reach millions of people and influence the way they think. And for us, generally, movies are not just entertainment, but they're a strong cultural medium. When I first heard the script of Daayra, I found it flawless. It's rooted in reality, and she makes powerful cinema. It raises a lot of disturbing questions, will provoke thoughts. I'm sure a lot of people, when they leave the cinema hall, these disturbing thoughts will stay with them, and they will have conversations and have debates and dialogue. This is one of the reasons I made the movie.” Kareena Kapoor Khan was asked about doing a certain type of serious roles as she completed 25 years in the industry. She replied, “Aisa kuch nahi hai. Beech mein Crew bhi aayi thi. I don’t think so. As an actor, talent hona zaruri hota hai, especially after 25 years of work. Maine har kism ka role kiya hai. Meghna is one of them.” Prithviraj Sukumaran reacted to comparisons between Daayra and Jana Gana Mana. The actor clarified that the former doesn’t take sides. The actor added that he neither agrees nor disagrees with his character, DCP Raman Kumar. Prithviraj further said that Daayra exists in the grey whereas Jana Gana Mana is more about the incident. The Meghna Gulzar film is set after the incident takes place and is more about the procedures and two different perspectives. He said it is exciting to see how one incident can inspire two films. Talking about the way female cops are showcased in Indian cinema, Kareena Kapoor Khan shared, “There is a stereotypical format that we have of a cop. She has a certain type of walk that’s manly, ek certain reaction deti hai. In this film, because of the sensitivity of the subject, Meghna was certain that she needed a ‘woman’ cop, who is like a woman- feminine but at the same time does everything with a smile and the way you saw her character Ajooni, who walks the straight ropes.” Meghna Gulzar said that, as a director, it was difficult for her to take sides while making Daayra. She shared, “As a filmmaker and the director of Daayra, it was difficult for me to pick sides because morals dilemma is overlapping on both (sides) - law and delivery of justice.
