Meghna Gulzar has earned credibility for her name after a long journey. She never stopped experimenting with subjects that were difficult, unexplored and dealt with the grey areas. Ahead of the release of Daayra, the National Award-winning director told Zoom exclusively that before achieving success, she faced a period when her parents, Gulzar and Rakhee, were more worried than her. Meghna also shared that there was a time when she avoided mentioning her surname due to the legacy it carries. Proud of her surname and the reverence that comes along, the filmmaker said she did not want to be viewed through the same lens. Meghna further added, “In the early part of my career, my films did not do well, and therefore the next film took longer to happen. It is not easy to get work. That phase was more difficult for my parents than for me because there was no way they could ensure my success and even if there was, I wouldn’t let them. My success has to be mine just like my failure is mine. For me, my film Talvar, the first film that succeeded, it was almost like ‘Thank God, now they will be at ease.’ It was not about I have made it or my audience likes my work.
