Yogesh Singh starts his second tenure as the Delhi University VC "The President of India, in her capacity as the Visitor of the University, in exercise of the powers conferred upon her in terms of Statute 11-F of the University has been pleased to re-appoint Professor Yogesh Singh as the Vice Chancellor of the University for a second term of five years w.e.f. 08.10.2026 conveyed by the Ministry of Education, Department of Higher Education, vide letter No. F.No. 2-8/2026-CU.II dated 02nd July, 2026," the official notice stated. "Accordingly, Professor Yogesh Singh shall continue as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Delhi for a second term of five years with effect from 08th October, 2026 (afternoon)," the notice added. Singh has taken control of the university at a time when the institute is trying to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in all its courses with measures such as a four-year undergraduate programme, a revised curriculum structure and admissions through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET). Interestingly, Singh is the only Vice Chancellor who has been given two consecutive terms since 1950. Yogesh Singh’s reappointment follows the Centre’s amendment to Statute 11-F(4) of the Delhi University Act in October 2023. Earlier, the provision limited a Vice-Chancellor’s tenure to five years and barred reappointment. The revised statute now permits the incumbent to serve a second five-year term. Under the previous rules, a Vice-Chancellor could remain in office beyond the five-year tenure until a successor assumed charge or for a period determined by the Visitor, subject to the applicable provisions. However, the statute did not permit the incumbent to be reappointed for another full term. The October 2023 amendment removed this restriction, allowing Vice-Chancellors to serve a second five-year term. Singh is the first Delhi University Vice-Chancellor to secure a second consecutive term under the revised provision.
