Students of the Jai Prakash Sarvodaya Vidyalaya in Lucknow staged a protest over a shortage of subject teachers on Friday morning. They alleged that the lack of teachers has been affecting their studies. The protest briefly disrupted traffic movement on Buddheswar-Mohan Road. According to a PTI report, the students came out of the school around 9 AM carrying posters and banners and staged the demonstration on the Budheshwar Mohan Road in the Para area. After receiving the information, the Para police team reached the spot and spoke to the students. The police said that the students were also dissatisfied with other irregularities at the schools. The police persuaded the students to end the demonstration and return to the school premises, following which the road was cleared. A discussion was held in the school’s meeting hall where the students were seated along with the education officials and teachers. Asim Arun, the state social welfare minister, was passing through the area for an official programme and came to know about the protest being staged by the students. The minister, who is also the MLA of Kannuaj, delayed his journey and spoke to the students as his department oversees the school. The minister then followed the students into schools and held discussions with them and the education official for around two hours. He told PTI that he is satisfied that the students staged a protest because they wanted their studies to be as good as possible and not to cheat or avoid attendance. He highlighted that some teachers have not been able to join their posts due to court cases, which is directly affecting teaching at some schools that are run by the Social Welfare Department. Arun added that in the next hearing, which is scheduled for August 17, the issues will be strongly presented before the High Court. Assuring the students, he said that their demands for improving coaching under the Mukhyamantri Abhyudaya Yojana would be addressed. The students staging the protest are being referred to as Gen Alpha, as similar demonstrations have been observed by school students in Fatehpur, Hamirpur and Kannauj over education and basic infrastructure-related problems.
