As per a PTI report, a notification was previously issued by the Directorate of School Education directing that all government schools would remain open on August 15 for Independence Day celebrations. The decision to keep schools open on Independence Day, August 15, 2026, was taken to ensure that the national occasion is celebrated with dignity and enthusiasm across government schools in the state. Along with that, flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural programmes and other patriotic events will be conducted in all the schools to celebrate the occasion. Students are encouraged to take part in the activities, such as essay writing, painting, and quizzes, on the special occasion. The holiday announcement was made during Sukhu's visit to Dadhol in the Ghumarwin assembly constituency of Bilaspur district, where he inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for 31 development projects worth Rs 475 crore. The officials also said that during the event, the Chief Minister also launched the Van Mahotsav at Nihari by planting a drumstick sapling. On the special occasion, he made an announcement that the monthly honorarium for Van Mitras will be increased from Rs 10,000 to Rs 12,000.
