Recalling the events of 1947, Singh described Partition as one of the most painful episodes in modern history. He said lakhs of people lost their lives, while around 1.5 crore people were forced to leave their homes and ancestral lands. “Along with celebrating India’s independence, we must also remember the agony of Partition,” Singh said. He stressed that remembering the tragedy is important to ensure that such an event is never repeated. Singh also paid tribute to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the country. He said their actions were guided by national interest rather than personal interests. Speaking about the responsibilities of citizens, the Vice-Chancellor emphasised the importance of performing one’s duties. He said that when individuals fulfil their responsibilities, the rights of others are automatically protected. Singh also called upon DU’s teachers, officials, staff and students to contribute to the vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047. He further said that the university should work towards securing a place among the world’s top 200 universities. The Independence Day celebrations were attended by Dean of Colleges Balaram Pani, Director of South Campus Rajni Abbi, Registrar Vikas Gupta, Dean of Academic Activities K Ratnabali and NCC Coordinator Major Sanjay Kumar, among others. Hindu College also celebrated Independence Day with flag hoisting, the singing of ‘Vande Mataram’ and the national anthem. Faculty members, students, non-teaching staff, frontline workers, NSS volunteers and NCC cadets from the Navy and Army wings participated in the celebrations. The college said a Tiranga Rally was organised on campus, with teachers leading the event and students, staff and volunteers participating. The rally featured patriotic slogans and the colours of the national flag, highlighting themes of unity, diversity and national pride.
