US issues travel advisory amid Houthi attacks (Credits: iStock) The United States has issues a new and fresh warning for Americans who are travelling to or through the Middle East as security tensions have begun to rise following the renewed Houthi attacks targeting Saudi Arabia. The latest alert came in after the Saudi authorities reported the interception of a ballistic missile headed towards Riyadh on September 19. There were explosions and smoke everywhere reported near the capital's airport. Saudi Arabia officials have also mentioned that the attempted attacks targeting other locations, including Yanbu, Taif, Baysh and Farasan, were thwarted. On the other hand, the Houthis claimed full responsibility for the attacks on what they described as as sensitive sites in Riyadh and an Aramco facility in Yanbu. Now, the US State Department has issued a new Saudi Arabia advisory which is at Level 3: Reconsider Travel. It mentions risks including Iranian missile and drone attacks, armed conflict, terrorism and other security concerns. Alongside this, the advisory also notes that Iran has launched missile and drone attacks into Saudi Arabia, while Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen have threatened further attacks against the kingdom. Instead, the US government is asking its citizens to carefully reconsider their travel plans, if they can be moved or shifted, because the security situation can change in a matter of seconds. This warning is particularly relevant for those who are travelling to or near sensitive infrastructure, airports, military facilities and/or, areas closer to the Yemen border. The US has separately classified the Yemen border region as Level 4: Do Not Travel, citing the threat of terrorism and attacks from armed groups in Yemen. This is one of the biggest concerns for travellers. The US State Department has warned that regional tensions can result in flight cancellations, airspace closures and other travel disruptions. Its wider Middle East guidance advises travellers to check directly with their airlines because schedules and routes can change with little notice. Travellers flying into or transiting through Saudi Arabia should therefore check their flight status before leaving for the airport and continue monitoring airline notifications during their trip. People already in Saudi Arabia should remain alert, follow instructions from local authorities and monitor official security updates. Travellers should also keep their airline and accommodation informed of any changes to their plans. The security concerns are not limited to Riyadh. Australia’s Smartraveller guidance also currently advises people to reconsider their need to travel to Saudi Arabia, citing renewed Houthi threats and the possibility of further attacks and escalation. It warns that regional conflict could cause sudden airspace closures, delays, cancellations and diversions. For travellers planning a Saudi Arabia trip, the key takeaway is to check the latest advisory and flight information immediately before departure. The situation remains fluid, and an operating flight or open airport does not necessarily mean that travel conditions will remain unchanged.
