West Bengal is home to many a red pandas (Credit: Nature inFocus) When you think West Bengal, your mind usually flits off to the state's vibrant Durga Puja celebrations - an eternal cultural zeitgeist in its own right, as well as a diverse mix of cultural landmarks and history. The old world charm is undeniable, but in a specifically urbane way. If you haven't lived there then, you wouldn't know that the state is also home to a Himalayan forest, housing breathtaking views and some of nature's most beautiful creations on four legs. We're specifically referring to the Singalila National Park, and the abundance of Red Pandas that thrive in it. This International Red Panda Day, we explore the state's best kept, mesmerising secret. Not just this, the landscape is also home to vibrant flora, the ancient forests home to across 18 different species of rhododendrons and magnolias, bright and spring-ly. Additionally, the space is a treat for birdwatchers as it is home to over 150 to 300 species of birds such as the Satyr Tragopan, Blood Pheasant as well as innumerable sunbirds. The airport itself is located about 95 kilometres from Manebhanjan, a route which can be covered via road over a 4 to 5 hour drive. Several guided tours offer a trek through the forest which can be embarked on once you arrive at its primary base. If you're travelling by rail, the New Jalpaiguri Junction station is the nearest train hub with Manebhanjan, again, being a 4 to 5 hour drive away. One can also opt for the historic Darjeeling Himalayan Railway - the Toy Train experience to Ghum, though this route will take roughly 7 to 8 hours. The route via Ghoom and Sukhiapori takes about an hour and a half to 2 hours.
