While many may hate the sight, flying with a baby is actually also equally stressful for the parent. From packing extra diapers to carrying feeding bottles everywhere, rearranging documents and more, everything comes with extra planning and now it has almost worsened. Parents travelling with infants on IndiGo will now also have to pay for more for the privilege of carrying their newborns with them. IndiGo has revised its charges for several ancillary services, including infant travel. The fee for an infant ticket has increased from ?2,000 to ?3,000, while the airline has also raised charges for excess baggage and other optional services. The revised infant charge applies to children aged above three days and below two years travelling without their own seat. But with the increased price, can parents expect any additional facilities? And moreover, what does an infant flight ticket come with in the country? The question on top is of course, 'does my child get a separate seat?' No. On IndiGo, an infant ticket does not come with a separate seat. Infants under two years must travel on an accompanying adult’s lap, and a separate seat cannot be booked for them under the airline’s infant policy. Only one infant is permitted per accompanying adult. The ticket is still mandatory even though the infant does not occupy a seat. But what about baggage allowance? This is where airline policies can differ. On IndiGo, an infant does not get a separate checked-in baggage allowance. However, the airline allows one hand bag of up to 7 kg, subject to its baggage rules. One stroller or baby pram per infant can also be carried without an additional charge. Parents should therefore not assume that paying the infant fee automatically gives the baby the same baggage entitlement as an adult passenger. Air India has different provisions. Its current policy gives infants travelling without a seat a checked baggage allowance of 10 kg in Economy, 12 kg in Premium Economy and 15 kg in Business and First Class. It also permits certain infant items as cabin baggage. Top on the list is the proof of child's age because it becomes a crucial factor in the child's seating. IndiGo accepts documents such as a birth certificate, vaccination certificate, passport or the mother’s hospital discharge papers. Without valid age proof, the airline says the applicable full fare may be charged, subject to seat availability. Parents should also check the individual airline’s rules before travelling, particularly for strollers, baby food, baggage and infant seating. The key takeaway still remains that an infant ticket is not simply a discounted passenger ticket. It primarily permits the baby to travel under the airline’s infant rules, usually without a separate seat. What the ticket includes beyond that, particularly baggage and baby-related equipment, can vary significantly between airlines.
