Matt Renshaw Breaks Jacques Kallis' Record, Becomes First Player In World To Achieve Rare Feat In South Africa
Matt Renshaw scripted a series of records as he made a strong impression after his comeback to the Test team for Australia and helped the Pat Cummins-led team thrash South Africa by 214 runs in the first Test of a three-match series at the Kingsmead Stadium in Durban. This was only the second game Renshaw played for the 2023 World Test Champions after his comeback to the team after three years. In the first innings, Renshaw made 190 runs after walking out to bat at number five. His knock helped Australia recover from a poor start to the first innings and post a massive total of 390 on the board despite being 124-6 at one stage. Later, he made 84 runs in the second innings. Moreover, he also took two wickets in the fourth innings, which were the big dismissals of Temba Bavuma and Kyle Verrenne. Renshaw has become the first player to score over 250 runs in a Test match on South African soil (home or away player) and take two or more wickets. The record was previously held by Proteas Jacques Kallis, who is widely known as the greatest all-rounder in cricket history. Most Runs In A Test Match After Taking 2 Or More Test Wickets Renshaw's tally of 272 runs is also the second-most by a batter in a Test match on South African soil (home or away player) from number five or below. Only Ben Stokes (284 runs with knocks of 268 and 26) is ahead of him in the elite list. Renshaw is the third player to score a century and a half-century in the same Test in South Africa from number five or below, after South Africa's Denis Lindsay (in 1966 vs Australia at Jo'burg) and Sri Lanka's Kusal Perera (in 2019 at Durban).
