After NEET 2026 Row, Karnataka Plans National Meet on Medical Admission Reforms Karnataka is set to convene a meeting of medical education ministers from different states on the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). The state’s Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil is planning to convene the meeting either later this month or next month. The meeting will be held to discuss and deliberate on NEET, and to seek the views and opinions of Medical Education Ministers from different states on the issue. The reason behind this meeting is that the Congress-led state government believes the Centre has failed to prevent flaws and irregularities in the NEET system. Through this meet, the Karnataka government aims to draft a common approach to give states a greater role in student assessment. Karnataka Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil recently said that the recent controversies surrounding the medical entrance examination have highlighted the need for a fresh national discussion on medical admissions. “After the recent NEET issue, there is a need to rethink the process. This is why we want to bring together ministers from different states and discuss the way forward,” he said. Patil believes that states should be given a greater role in assessing the incoming medical students and also suggested that marks obtained in Plus Two/ Pre-University Course (PUC)/ class 12 examinations along with Common Entrance Test (CET) scores should be given weightage in the admission process. Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports on Tuesday reviewed the conduct of the NEET UG 2026 re-examination. The committee also discussed on a series of reforms aimed at strengthening the country's medical entrance examination system. During the meeting, experts suggested introducing separate entrance examinations for MBBS, AYUSH and Nursing programmes to reduce the large number of candidates appearing for a single national-level test. NEET UG 2026 was held on May 3, 226, but was then cancelled within a few weeks due to reports of widespread paper leak. The re-exam was then held on June 21, while the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently investigating the paper leak matter.
